bem vindos ao mundo da cultura biológica, esse mundo com o qual eu me identifico, e com o qual acredito podemos viver muitas histórias felizes.
bem vindos também ao mundo do Bio & Natural, o espaço do El Corte Inglês Gaia Porto, aberto no início deste ano, e onde encontramos uma ampla gama de marcas dedicadas à produção biológica, especialmente de pequenos produtores locais.
deste interessante encontro, nasceu a vontade de ir mais longe, e de dar a conhecer quem são exactamente esses pequenos produtores, que vivem da terra, dos seus cheiros, e do que ela nos dá através dos seus ciclos naturais de vida.
aqui fica assim a primeira história feliz e a entrevista com o primeiro produtor.

welcome to the world of the organic plantations, a world with which I identify myself, and with which I believe we can live very happy stories.
welcome as well to the world of Bio & Natural store, the existing bio space at El Corte Inglês Gaia Porto, that opened at the beginning of this year, and where we can find a wide range of organic brands, specially from small local producers.
from this interesting meeting, the will to go further was born, like letting know exactly who these small producers are, producers who live from the earth, from its smells, and from what the earth can give us, based on its natural cycles.
so here the first happy story and the interview with the first producer.

Luís Alves será talvez o mais mediático dos produtores que se encontram no Bio&Natural.
o seu "Cantinho das Aromáticas", uma quinta urbana localizada no centro de Gaia e que se dedica à produção de plantas para infusões, chás e condimentos, (tudo tão bom!) tem sido alvo de vários prémios e distinções, tendo este ano arrecadado o segundo lugar dos Great Taste Awards (os óscares da alimentação), competindo com empresas de chás, infusões e tisanas de todo o mundo.
é também uma das poucas quintas em espaço urbano a praticar agricultura biológica na Europa Ocidental, e esse facto tem sido destacado por toda a imprensa internacional.
eu (finalmente) visitei a quinta, lindíssima, para entrevistar o Luís, e para perceber um bocadinho melhor como toda esta produção funciona.

Luís Alves must be one of the most mediatic producer at Bio&Natural.
his place "Cantinho das Aromáticas", an urban farm located in the centre of Gaia, and dedicated to the production of herbal teas and spices (so good) has been awarded several times, this year achieving the second place at the Great Taste Awards (the food oscars), where it was competing with worldwide tea and herbal teas companies.
it is also one of the few urban farms practicing organic culture in Europe, and that fact has been highlighted in the international press.
I finally visited the farm, which is beautiful, in order to interview Luís, and to know a little bit more of the whole production.

Podemos saber um pouco como tudo começou, e porquê o nome Cantinho (das Aromáticas) ?
- sempre tive um gosto especial por animais e por plantas, e a minha formação passou pela Escola Agrícola de Santo Tirso e posteriormente pela UTAD, onde me formei em Engenharia Agrícola. profissionalmente passei por Serralves, onde me apaixonei pela horta urbana, que é a mais incrível do país, e estive lá alguns anos, a gerir a coleção botânica e a dar vários workshops de jardinagem.
em 2002, arrendei 3 dos 10 hectares da Quinta do Paço, esta quinta lindíssima do século XIV, começando apenas como viveirista mas já a produzir mais de 150 espécies; entre 2007 e 2013 comecei a exportar ervas secas para a cosmética e fármacos, e desde 2013 que criei a marca própria. nos últimos três anos temos tido um crescimento incrível, e ganho sempre prémios nos Great Taste Awards.
desde 2005, este espaço está também aberto ao público, queremos estar próximos dos consumidores, queremos que vejam o nosso processo produtivo, e nós gostamos de nos mostrar.
há muito poucas empresas na europa que façam produção da semente até ao produto final, e isso é motivo de orgulho para nós.
o nome Cantinho surgiu porque toda a gente me vinha pedir ervas para o cantinho que tinham lá em casa,....e assim ficou o Cantinho das Aromáticas.:)

Tell us a little bit of how everything started, and the reason for the name Cantinho (lithe corner) (das Aromáticas)?
- I always liked animals and plants, and did my studies at the agricultural school at Santo Tirso, and then at the UTAD, graduating as an agricultural engineer. I then worked in Serralves, where I fell in love with the urban garden - which is incredible! - was there for some years leading the botanical collection and giving some workshops.
in 2002, I rented 3 of the 10 hectares of Quinta do Paço, this beautiful Quinta from the XIV century, starting only with vase production, but with more than 150 species. Between 2007 and 2013 exported dried plants for cosmetic and health, and since 2013 I have our own brand. in the last three years it has been amazing, all years winning prizes at the Great Taste Awards.
since 2005, this place is open to the public, we want to be close to our consumers, and everyone can see our production process. there are only a few companies in europe that do the production from the seed to the final product, and we are proud of it.
the name little corner is because at the beginning friends and everyone was asking me to have some plants to plant in their little corner at home or in the yard...:)

Como encara esta parceria com o El Corte Inglês?
- é uma iniciativa de louvar! o facto de um gigante como o El Corte Inglês perceber o valor de parcerias com produtores locais é fantástico.
e para nós é muito bom, nós somos líderes de vendas na categoria de infusões e condimentos, e temos o privilégio de ter lá um expositor com o nosso logo. eu próprio no início dei formação aos colaboradores e vários workshops aos clientes.
o El Corte Inglês é uma referência no grande Porto e este projeto do Bio & Natural uma lufada de ar fresco.
Existe uma planta da felicidade? :)
- talvez a perpétua-roxa, ou a minha favorita, que é a lúcia-lima.
mas o consumo de tisanas e infusões tem sempre uma fonte de prazer associada. as pessoas bebem tisanas porque lhes dá prazer, e eu faço muitas vezes analogia com os vinhos. :)
A produção biológica é o futuro?
- esperemos que sim! mas ainda há muito caminho a percorrer.
um agricultor comum mata os bichos, um agricultor biológico sabe que há um bicho que come o outro bicho, e por isso vai fazer uso desses animais auxiliares.
o que nós temos aqui é um projecto holístico, que vai desde a semente até ao produto final, respeitando todo o ciclo natural.

How do you see this partnership with El Corte Inglês?
this is a great thing! how a giant company like El Corte Inglês understands the value of partnerships with local producers.
and for us it is really good, we are sales leaders for herbal teas and spices, and we have the privilege of having there an exhibitor with our logo . at the beginning I also gave some training to the workers, and some workshops to the clients.
El Corte Inglês is a reference in Porto area, and this Bio & Natural project is a very interesting project!
Is there a plant for happiness? :)
- maybe "perpétua-roxa", or my favourite plant, "lúcia-lima".
but herbal tea consumption has some pleasure in itself, people drink if for pleasure. I always speak of an analogy with drinking wine.:)
Organic/bio production is the future?
- we hope so! but there is still a long way to go.
a normal farmer kills the bugs, the organic farmer knows there are some animals that will eat the other animal, so will make use of these helping animals.
what we have here is a holistic project, from the seed to the final product, respecting the normal life cycle.
